The Jackson Hole Fine Art Fair (JHFAF) is proud to announce that Anne Phillips is the recipient of its inaugural Collector of the Year Award for 2019. Anne was chosen for this esteemed award as a member of JHFAF’s Collectors Circle; a group of notable VIP Collectors in the genres of Western, Wildlife and Contemporary Art. “Anne was selected for this honor by JHFAF’s Advisory Board because she is a deeply committed fine art collector”, says JHFAF producer Rick Friedman, “and one who contributes to her local cultural community. In addition, Anne Phillips is heir to an important legacy in a truly American fine art genre, the Taos School. It is wonderful to give our first Collector of The Year Award to someone who has a collection that bridges all the genres that JHFAF represents, and includes works by Native Americans and important American female artists. This is exactly the kind of collection we should celebrate right out of the gate.”
About Her Collection
Bert Geer Phillips (1868-1956), Anne’s great grandfather was a co-founder of the Taos Society of Artists, in 1898. A member of the now famed Taos Seven, Bert Geer Phillips established the Taos Art Colony and is known for his evocative paintings of Native Americans and the American Southwest. His works are sought after today and his great granddaughter Anne is the proud owner of a number of Bert Geer Phillips’ paintings.
Anne has built upon on her Taos School Legacy Collection with the addition of works by E. Irving Couse (1866-1936), the first president of the Taos Society of Artists and work by co-founder of the Taos School and celebrated portrait painter of Native Americans, Joseph Henry Sharp (1859-1953). Anne’s important American collection spans the late 19th century to now with works by Navajo artist and noted WWII code talkerBeatien Yazz (1928-2012) a.k.a “Little No Shirt”; the coveted New York based modern American landscape painter Eric Sloane (1905-1985), Gerald Curtis Delano (1890 – 1972); Raphael
Lillywhite (1891-1958); noted female painter Gene Kloss (1903-1996), whose works are in the Smithsonian collection; bronze sculptor and painter Ace Powell (1912-1978), and contemporary painters of the new west Larry Pirnie, Robert Moore and Kendahl Jan Jubb.
Anne Phillips epitomizes the art of collecting, with her passion, enthusiasm, and knowledge. She is a devoted supporter of the Missoula Art Museum, as well as Living Art in Missoula, Montana. As an active patron of notable fine art galleries and western art auctions, Anne serves as a paragon, and inspiration for other collectors. She is an articulate and frank spokesperson and one that everyone can relate to, whether they have her American fine art heritage or are just starting to collect.
Her advice to new collectors—“start with buying art you really like – (art) that has some meaning to you. Don’t make a purchase just because of a name.” – Unless of course your name happens to be Phillips, and you wish to preserve your great grandfather’s important American art legacy.
Jackson Hole Fine Art Fair is proud to honor Anne Phillips with its first Collector of the Year Award.
